Maintaining legal leadership during
a critical absence
Learn how we helped a global pharmaceutical company ensure continuity across regions with an interim legal leader.
Background
When we were engaged by a multi-national pharmaceutical company operating across the UK and EMEA, they were facing the sudden absence of a senior legal leader who operated at executive level across multiple regions.
This role extended beyond traditional legal support. It sat within regional leadership teams, led complex pricing and reimbursement negotiations, and ensured alignment across legal and ethics functions internationally. The absence therefore created a risk not only to day-to-day operations, but to strategic continuity and executive confidence.
The organisation required an immediate solution that would maintain momentum across jurisdictions while providing the authority and credibility expected at this level.
The LS Law Approach
We approached the situation as a leadership and risk management issue rather than a resourcing gap. The priority was to restore continuity at executive level without disruption to ongoing commercial and regulatory activities.
Within 14 days, we identified and appointed a senior interim legal leader with experience in the pharmaceutical sector and a track record of operating across multiple jurisdictions. The individual was able to step into the role on a flexible basis, initially for six months and subsequently extended to ensure stability until a permanent appointment was made.
From the outset, the interim operated as a fully integrated member of the leadership team. This included participating in regional forums, maintaining oversight of pricing and reimbursement negotiations, and managing a team of senior lawyers.
Our focus was on ensuring that there was no loss of alignment across legal, compliance, and commercial functions. By providing an individual with both sector expertise and executive presence, we ensured continuity without the need for a transition period.
The Outcome
The organisation maintained uninterrupted legal leadership across all relevant regions.
Commercial negotiations, including those relating to pricing and reimbursement, continued without delay. Internal alignment across legal and ethics functions was preserved, and the legal team remained stable and supported throughout the period.
The interim arrangement provided 12 months of consistent oversight, allowing the organisation to manage the transition to a permanent appointment in a controlled manner. At no stage was there a loss of confidence at board or leadership level.
Deep relief that the business did not experience a gap in leadership. It experienced controlled transition.
